Very important: For parents

I try to do most of the teaching and work in class because I understand most parents do not speak French.
This does not mean your child has nothing to do for French class on most nights!!

I have told students to go on my website every night and practice their French through music, videos and websites on the extras tab. Other strategies include making flash cards or practicing with already existing flash cards. Reviewing notes, practicing writing and saying vocabulary out loud are also good strategies.

I am finding some students are excelling with this method of in-class attention and different approaches to a language such as music. Others however are not progressing as well as I would expect them to. Below are strategies to help your child succeed

Grade 4 and 5 is the starting point to French, it is very easy to succeed with effort and the following strategies:

-Participate in class!
-Study!! (There is ALWAYS new vocabulary, it is a new language, study it every night! Students are told minimum a week ahead that there is a test and they are always given some time to study in class, I am finding for some students it is not enough- encourage them to study more at home!)
-Review notes and worksheets! (yes they have those!! I will remind them to take their French binder home more often)
-Make or play with already existing Flash cards! (The grade 4s have made flash cards of over 30 classroom objects in class, they know how to make flash cards)
– Write sentences in French! (Both grade 4 and 5 have already seen le verbe Avoir and Etre, students should be able to put them in a sentence. They have a reference sheet with all the pronouns and conjugated verbs if they forget how to! They also have work sheets on these verbs!)
-Listen to music or TV shows in French!! (This is the easiest homework and it’s on this website!!)

Please visit the For Parents tab as well as the  no homework? page for more things you and your child can do.

Grade 4 parents:

Just as a reminder the progress report and first term report in French grade was only an Oral mark. We started Reading and Writing as well as evaluations for this at the end of February.
