Dictionaries, Translating and Correcting work in French- Resources and links

I encourage students to use dictionaries such as Larousse.

I understand it is easier to look up the word online. Google translate does not work well, please don’t use it as a resource.

A great dictionary/translating website is : http://www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/anglais-francais

A great website to correct written work in French and point out what needs to be modified or changed is : http://bonpatron.com/en/

Creating a video

We are starting to work on a video project.

Students have chosen their own groups for this.

The project will be paused for a couple of classes once all the penpal letters are given in and corrected (they were due BEFORE March Break so please hand it in ASAP if you haven’t). They will write out their good copy once they receive their corrected letters from me and we will send it off to the other school.

We will then keep working on this video project as the other school is writing their replies to our letters.

Here is more information on the video project: https://mmegirouard.com/grade-5/grade-5-projects/creating-a-video/

Pen pal letters due

5-2’s lesson today: gender equality and bullying

We found a school to write to for pen pals!! Very exciting! I will post more information on this very soon!

The drafts (best copy) is due to me Friday March 13 2015. I will correct them during March Break and we will write the good copy to send to the school the week we are back.

As I started to explain that there might not be an equal amount of boys and girls in the other class so they might write to someone of the opposite sex, we got into a discussion on gender. We started talking about how it was ok for boys to like pink and purple and girls can do whatever sports they want.

The students shared amazing stories and comments!

We also got into the subject of bullying and cyber bullying, although it wasn’t what I had planned for that class it was such a valuable lesson!! We explained how if there’s a problem and someone is bullying you, you should ask for help.
Also if someone asks you for help you should try to help them and if you can’t help them or don’t know what to do then you should tell them to talk to someone about it like a parent or a teacher.

We also went over how it’s not nice to write mean comments online, that it hurts people’s feelings.
If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it.

Conversations like this make my job so valuable and I am so grateful for it!! I will have this conversation with 5-1 as well because it was a very valuable class.

We watched this video:

Pen pal letters!

We’re almost ready to write our penpal letters!! I’ve been calling schools to arrange an exchange of letters.

The students have been looking at questions such as (Feel free to practice asking and answering them!) :

      1. Combien de personnes est-ce qu’il y a dans ta famille?
      1. Qui est dans ta famille ?
      1. Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire à l’école ?
      1. Quelle est ta matière préférée ?
      1. Quel est ton passe-temps ?
      1. Quel est ton sport favori ?

Verbes Etre et Avoir

We have finished the reading unit of “Le Hibou Savant”. We are now learning/going over (from last year) the verbe Avoir and Etre in the present tense. We will also see simple ER verbs such as the verb Aimer.

The students will be evaluated on this in a quiz, (UPDATE- I have cancelled the quiz for now and expect them to use the verbs in context in their penpal letters) they will also use these verbs to create a letter (more details on this coming later- first we will learn the verbs and reinforce their use).

Here are a few videos on Avoir and Etre to start:

Question words

We often use question words and sentences in class during activities such as super prof and in daily conversations.

Please practice this at home and review this for class.
